1. Linguistic analysis
The focus of the textbook exercises is the simple past. Please apply specific concepts
and terminology introduced in the module “Introduction to English Linguistics” to your
answers. Please be detailed, but precise in your analysis.
A. Complete exercise 1. Following this, carry out a morphological analysis of your
solutions. Categorise all of the morphemes that you identify and identify the type
of morphological process involved.
B. Complete exercise 3. Describe the point of this exercise in morphological terms.
Note: While there are spelling differences apparent in the exercise, your discussion
of allomorphs is concerned with sound, not spelling. Use the phonetic alphabet in
your explanation to ensure that this is the case.
C. Following on from Exercise 3, describe the rule for the formation of the simple past
tense in concise morphological terms.
D. Define the concept of productivity and decide if the simple past tense morpheme
is a productive morpheme in present day English.
E. In exercise 3, you will have noticed that there are several spelling rules that you
will have to address with your students, for example: y → i + ed. Provide examples
from the exercises to support the statement: “There is no one-to-one relationship
between sound and spelling in English”
