Anthropology – providing a detailed description of the assigned video

The assignment is an expansion on fieldwork exercises that you did for one of the previous seminars. The assignment is to watch a video and describe it in 2-3 pages.

This is a video taken on a street in Belgrade, Serbia. It is about 20 minutes long, and you need to watch it in full. Since it is a video of an everyday situation (people walking on a street), there is no specific “event” to look into. Instead, it is mundane and everyday. However, this does not mean that there is nothing to describe.
The goal of the video is a detailed description, so take your time. Since you only have 2-3 pages, you will need to make choices on what to describe and how closely/how detailed. You can describe things generally, but do take time to describe at least one thing (a building, specific group of people, etc.) in more detail. Pay attention to things outside of the visual: what are the sounds? The rhythm? How do people move? Think of the place and its purpose. Also, make sure to notice repetitions/patterns and also things that stand out to you in any way (be it because someone/something is different than how you are used to, or because someone did something differently than other people, etc.)
Feel free to include your personal thoughts throughout the writing. Anything is valid, from being surprised by something, a detail that makes you think about something from your own experience, to thoughts about the process itself (do you find it tedious? Are you unsure what to write about? – all these things are ok to include). This is because we are making a simulation of field notes – things you would write down in your notebook while you are observing things on the field.
