SCB202 Lab Pictures Assignment – Fall II 2020-21 Online Instruction Version

The Lab Pictures assignment in SCB202 involves documenting (with photographs) specimens,
dissections, microscope slides and models studied in the lab, annotating and organizing the
images according to lab number and topic into a single file. An easy way to do this is to open a
Word file and insert a table with two columns and multiple rows and then insert an image in each
“box” as shown below (“Image 1”, “Image 2” etc represent photos, with a suitable title below
each image). The advantage of this layout is that you can usually have 6 images per page, which
makes the final file more compact. As you add more images the table rows will continue onto the
following pages. At the end of the semester after making suitable edits you should save the file
as a PDF and upload this PDF file using the link your instructor will provide on Blackboard. This
suggested arrangement results in a more compact file. For very larger specimens/images showing
many features you may use a different format as appropriate.

This semester due to online instruction you will not be able to take photos of specimens, etc.
in the lab. Instead, you will be required to find suitable photos of the items listed below
using internet search engines like Google. The photos you find on the internet will
substitute for photos you would have taken in the lab; the rest of the assignment would be
as described above. Note that some photos you find maybe very large or have additional things
not relevant for your purpose, so please resize and/or crop the images so that they show the
organisms or parts relevant for the assignment. Small organisms or parts of organisms are
usually studied in the lab as prepared microscope slides. Abbreviations used on the labels of such
slides are: wm = whole mount (whole organism, i.e. not a section), cs = cross section, ls =
longitudinal section. If you need more information about the organisms or any other items in the
list below please see the Lab Powerpoints or your Lab Manual. Important: The images you
include must be photographs of actual specimens, not textbook diagrams or artists’ impressions
of the structures.
For the Fall II 2020-21 semester you will be required to include in your Lab Pictures
assignment only the topics covered in Labs 7 to Lab 11 dealing with animal structure and
function (anatomy and physiology)..
