Writing Exercise #2: Formal Analysis: Description

Part 1. Reading: Chapters 1—3, Writing About Art, Karen Gocsic & Elizabeth Adan For the reading, I have focused specific passages in the book, but feel free to read beyond my suggestions. For Part 1, answer questions specific about the book’s content. Review Chapter 1, read the sections titled “Summarize,” ” Evaluate,” “Analyze,” and “Synthesize” on pages 19-27. This describes aspects of thinking and observing related to art writing. Chapter 2: “Looking at Art”: please read pages 35—42; 53—57. Chapter 3: “Analyzing Art”: please read pages 59-78 Answer the following questions: 1. On page #61, the writers declare, “Whatever formal element or elements you choose to write about, you need to offer your reader dynamic, detailed, descriptive writing. In other words, you need to show, not merely tell, your readers what you see.” In your own words, explain what this means and give an example of descriptive writing that “shows” and writing that “tells.” Consider the paragraph examples on pages 61-63 and or provide your own examples. 2. Write a brief paragraph (approximately one-five sentences) that communicates your understanding of “form” vs. “content” of an artwork. And explore documentation of their online exhibitions. For this exercise, I would like you to choose one image, specifically, to write about. Make sure you pick a project you will not mind working with over the next few weeks. The goal is to have the identifying information of the image, the direct link to the image, and a minimum 250-500 words of notes that discuss t the formal aspects of image. Questions: 1) Identify and communicate the detail information of the image. (Most images have identifying information in the caption that includes the artist or project name, location, and date) For example: Title: Los Derechos de los Niños y Niñas. Use this checklist to help you brainstorm and write a minimum of 250-500 words, (typed, double spaced, 12 point type) of notes about the formal properties of the artwork. You can freewrite, and feel free to go beyond the minimum. We’ll be using these notes for your Formal Analysis paper. The goal here is to note down your observations. FOCUS ON THE FORMAL ASPECTS OF THE WORK. Be sure to set aside some time so you can really use your art and design vocabulary. In the module, I have supplemental information on art and design vocabulaagnry that can help you brainstorm.
