Age of Imperialism: Current Events

You will be selecting any two (2) countries that you did NOT focus on in your DBQ Essay. Research
and identify at least two (2) major events that occurred in those countries during the 21st century (2000
– present) that can be traced back to the Age of Imperialism. These can be long-term effects of larger
events that occurred in the 20th century. You will then edit the Google Slides already created in Google
Classroom to summarize the news articles you found about your countries.
Requirements:
– Select two (2) different countries from (2) different continents that were imperialized by
Europeans in the 19th and 20th centuries.
– You may not select the same countries you wrote about in the DBQ
– Look up and research at least (3) different sources for each country.
o You may not use any of the articles that we looked at / discussed in class
o The articles you select should be of decent length in order to assess similarities /
differences between the sources
Google Slides Requirements:
– Age of Imperialism (10 points x2)
o Location of the event from your news story (country/continent/specific region?)
o Identify the colonizing country during the Age of Imperialism
o Research: How did the colonizing country govern this region?
§ Direct, Indirect, Protectorate, etc.
§ Were the colonized given Civil Rights? Equality? Persecuted? Apartheid system?
Etc.
§ Be specific with laws and government systems.
§ Answer should be about two paragraphs per country.
o Identify the country’s year of independence and its current form of government
o Pictures to include: map of country (which shows at minimum its regional location;
meaning not a map only of the country but shows its neighbors / continent / etc.), its
flag; others you deem appropriate.
– Current Event (10 points x2)
o Summarize the news stories you chose (one paragraph)
o Explain how these news stories link back to the Age of Imperialism (and themes we
discussed during the Industrial Revolution if applicable) in at least a paragraph
o Include relevant pictures that connect to the news stories w/ caption explanations
