“after the Mayflower” reaction paper
“We Shall Remain” is an award-winning, five episode, Native-written and produced documentary highlighting major events and personalities in American Indian history. Beginning with contact between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians, this episode, “After the Mayflower,” focuses on European and Native interaction in colonial New England. Your assignment is to watch the episode (75 minutes in length) and then write a reaction paper of at least 500 words (double-spaced, MS-Word) addressing the following questions: How would you describe the relationship(s) between the colonists and the natives of eastern New England during the period covered by the documentary? Include both personal (i.e. individual) and group (i.e. Pilgrims and Wampanoag) relationships. Did these relationships evolve or change during the course of the film? Why or why not. Be specific. Finally, how is the interpretation of Thanksgiving included in this episode both similar to and different from what you have been exposed to in modern American culture? Be sure to look at my grading rubric before your start writing.
