The dates for your site correspond to the same PERIOD covered by the the two chapters read this week. The period restriction corresponds to the date when the current structure was BUILT, which is not necessarily when the institution in question was founded.

100 WORDS connecting site to reading themes:
Decatur House is located at 48 Jackson Place, NW Washington, DC, and is the first private residence constructed in Lafayette square for Stephen Decatur and his wife, Susan. Decatur House was designed by renowned architect Henry Latrobe who also was commissioned for St. John’s Episcopal Church and sections of the White House. This DC historical site connected directly to our week’s reading in chapter 3, where Decatur House is mentioned as a known place for having a “slave pen” (Chocolate City, p. 70). Decatur House and Lafayette Tavern were both empathized in the reading as examples of places where enslaved individuals were held and sold. Also, a focal point of the reading for this week was the efforts of enslaved individuals to earn their freedom through various processes. According to the White House Historical Association, in 1829, Charlotte Dupuy sued resident Henry Clay for her freedom while living in Decatur House. Although Decatur House is only mentioned one time specifically in the reading, it’s a prime example of a historical site during the early 1800s. It housed influential leaders/lawmakers and was highlighted for their utilization of enslaved individuals in a location less than a half-mile from the White House.
