Mary was pleased with how her presentation was received by the interviewing committee. They were attentive and asked useful questions. She was happy she had thought the design process through thoroughly when one of the committee members asked her to describe the model she would follow in order to assess the curricular needs at XYZ school. She was able to briefly describe possible models and point to the one she thought would be best for implementing the improvement plan.
There are many tools or models for guiding practitioners to design action research plans. Explore the commonly used models for action research or program evaluation for the purpose of completing an improvement plan. Consider the question, “What tools do you need to guide and design your AIP?”

Research Models
As you move closer to finalizing your AIP, consider the type of research you will need to do in order to complete your task. After reading these two articles (Jacobs et al. for action research and Frye et al. for evaluation study), research the models listed below to gain insight into which model best matches your plan.

This article (1) defines what program evaluation is, (2) reviews the theories, including systems theory and complexity theory, that influence the development of evaluation models, and (3) describes four models: experimental/quasi-experimental model, Kirkpatrick’s approach, the logic model, and the CIPP (context/input/process/product) model.
