Competency-Building Activity 1.1 -Conceptualizing a New Human Service Program

Begin the process of creating your own hypothetical human service program. As you think about a program that you would want to develop, address the following questions:

What kind of need might your program address? Would you be focusing on a particular population or a particular issue or problem? Identify the population or issue you plan to address.
As you consider your program, think about what the central mission of this program would be. Write a very brief statement about this central mission.
Give your program a name.

Choose a program about which you feel a sense of passion. You will be coming back to your hypothetical program after each chapter so that you can apply what you have learned.

Case Activity 1.1

The case activity that concludes Chapter 1 -students can choose from among several examples of people who have had successful careers in providing direct services but who are facing new challenges requiring managerial skill as well. . Once you examine the case and facts in the textbook, come up with a resolution to their situation based in the information, core concepts found in the chapter 1 reading.

Competency-Building Activity 2.1 – : Knowing the Environment

At the close of Chapter 1, you began the process of developing your own hypothetical program. You began to consider your dreams for this program. You thought about the difference you could make in the lives of a particular population. You gave your program a name. Now it is time to consider the environment within which your program will exist:

What are the political, economic, social, and technological factors that would be most likely to affect the clients you will serve? (Make a brief list of these factors.)
How might you go about assessing the needs and the strengths of your program’s community?
What factors of culture and diversity would have the greatest effect on your clients and your program?

Case Activity 2.1

In the case study presented at the close of Chapter 2, Marcia, Angela, and Pam, employees of their city’s Department of Human Services, faced great difficulties in meeting the needs of the battered women they wanted to help. . Once you examine the case and facts in the textbook, come up with a resolution to their situation based in the information, core concepts found in the chapter 2 reading.

Thus this week assignment exercises should be in one document – which is no less than 2 pages and no more than three for both exercises – thus you should submit at least 2 pages for both exercises – but no more than 3.
