Rhetorical Analysis

Instruction: In this Essay #2, you are going to write an essay of rhetorical
analysis of 4 -5 full pages on the article chosen from Washington Post:

“ Is it Warm Here” by David Ignatius

1). The Deadlines

The first typed draft for Peer Review/Workshop on Blackboard will be DUE on April 5 (Monday), 2021.
The final revised hard copy of your Essay #2 will be April 7, (Wednesday) 2021.
Make sure that you will submit your final revised Essay 2 to SafeAssign.
The outline is optional but is strongly recommended.
The acceptable percentage for this assignment on SafeAssin is about 25%.

3). The Recommended Structure/ Organization for your Essay 2- Rhetorical Analysis

Introduction:
In this introduction, please First discuss the following aspects:

the title of the article ( what is it?), the author (who is he or she?), the time of (when was it written?) and the place of (where was it published?) the article publication, the social situation ( Under what social context or what was going in the society when the article was written?)
the topic of this article (what is the topic of the article?)
the purposes of the author in writing this article ( why did the author write this article?)
How does the author achieve her purposes? Or through using what rhetorical strategies/appeals does the author communicate her main idea (you need to state this main idea explicitly) successfully? (This answer should be express in one complete sentence, and it will function as your thesis statement for your essay of rhetorical analysis.) For example:

Through appealing to our sense of reasoning, establishing her own credibility, and using an effective organization, Sherry Turkle writes an enlightening article that calls our attention to both the positive and negative effects of information technology on humans and encourage us to rebuild the culture around information technology.

NOTE: The thesis for a rhetorical analysis should include TWO parts: ONE is the main achievement of the author (could be the main idea or the main message), and the OTHER part is the specific rhetorical strategies or rhetorical appeals the author uses to communicate the main message.

Discussion
In this part, you need to explain and support the different aspects of rhetorical strategies that help the author to communicate her/his main ideas you present in your thesis statement. So you need to create several topic sentences, which will need to be explained and support in detail by citing the author’s article and your analysis on them..

Body paragraph 1

In this first body paragraph, with examples from the given article, please do an audience analysis by addressing:
1. Who are the targeted or the intended audiences?
2. Why does the author want to talk to/ write to the intended audiences?
3. How does the author effectively connect himself/ herself with his/her audiences?
4. How does the author effectively win his/her audiences’ trust and support?

Body paragraphs 2-3 (if applicable, for example, discuss the author’s use of logos)

Crate a topic sentence to show how the author has used logos to appeal to the audiences’ reason to help them understand the problem/ the situation/ solutions. To support and explain your topic sentence, first, you need to identify the different types of logos from the essay and summarize them. Then, you make comments on how each specific example(s) of logos helps the author to explain/support her/his main idea (This is your analysis!)

Body paragraphs 4-5 (if applicable, for example, discuss the author’s use of ethos)

Crate a topic sentence to show how the author has used ethos to win audiences’ trust so that to accept her/his position on the topic. To support and explain your topic sentence, first, you need to identify the different types of ethos from the essay and summarize them. Then, you make comments on how each specific example(s) of ethos helps the author to explain/support her/his main idea (This is your analysis!)
