Introductory paragraph: (TEW 149-61)
General statements: three or more sentences that introduce the topic / supply necessary background information (context) / lead readers to the thesis statement.
Thesis statement: last sentence of the introductory paragraph. A one-sentence statement of the claim the essay intends to argue.
Body paragraphs (TEW 169-78)
The essay should contain three body paragraphs.
Begin each body paragraph with a claim in the topic sentence which states clearly the one supporting point for the thesis that the paragraph intends to explain/develop.
Support the topic sentence with quotations, summaries, or paraphrases of relevant information from your secondary sources, along with your analysis or commentary. Incorporate quotes into your sentences and punctuate properly. Do not misquote. Direct quotes cannot take up more than 10% of the word count, so be prepared to summarize or paraphrase long pieces of secondary-source information. The majority of the essay should be your writing.
Provide a citation (author’s last name + page number) whenever you quote, paraphrase or summarize information from an outside (secondary) source.
Body paragraphs must have unity (focus on the point) and coherence (sentences should progress in a smooth and logical order).
