Hello, I’d like a revision done on this paper. My professor said the point of the paper was missed. The paper is supposed to be about identifying the technical standards that are discussed in the Professional Expectation and Standards handout below.

The Human Services and Chemical Dependency Counseling Student Must Have:

Communication:
Students should be able to communicate with and observe clients in order to elicit information, describe developmental stages and perceive nonverbal communications. They must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully with all clients, referral sources and agency staff. Communication includes not only speech but also reading and writing in English. They must be able to communicate effectively, sensitively and efficiently in professional oral and written formats.

Behavioral and Social Attributes
Students must be able to interact with peers, clients, staff and faculty in an emotionally stable, professional, honest and ethical manner. They must take personal and professional responsibility for their behavior in their present life situations and in the community. In addition, the respect of diversity of cultures among clients, staff, faculty and peers is paramount.

Students must possess the emotional health required to exercise good judgment. The completion of all responsibilities related to the care and planning for clients is required. The development of mature, sensitive, effective and professional relationships with all clients, staff and referral agencies is expected.

Students must be able to tolerate and adapt to changing environments, display flexibility, and learn to function in the face of uncertainties in the field and assigned agency setting. Agency placements involve application of skills acquired in the classroom setting to actual clients and programs. In addition to the cognitive and critical thinking skills required in all agency settings, students must also demonstrate skills in assessment, referral and advocacy.

Recognition of Qualifications and Limitations:
Students must recognize the limitations to their training and abilities and must not exceed these in working with clients and various programs. It is important that students recognize when situations are beyond their knowledge or ability. When such situations arise, students will seek assistance from their supervisors and instructor.

Responsibility:
Students must demonstrate an ability to fulfill professional commitments and to be accountable for their actions. Individuals must demonstrate effective work habits and attitudes (e.g. reliability, task completion), in classes, internship placements and other areas of student performance.

Students should demonstrate the ability to act and respond in a variety of situations with honesty and integrity. They should be knowledgeable about professional ethical standards and competent in applying those standards in concrete situations.

Commitment to Learning:
Students must effectively demonstrate the ability to self-assess, self-correct, and self-direct; to identify needs and resources for learning; to continually seek new knowledge and understanding.

Students must possess good academic and life-management skills. For example, the ability to prioritize and manage a variety of commitments, time and stress; critical thinking skills; problem-solving and ethical decision-making skills; quality participation in class exercises and assignments.
All individuals must demonstrate a commitment to excellence as a human services and chemical dependency counseling professional.
Personal Maturity:
Students should possess the ability to live and function at an appropriate level of emotional, psychological and relational well-being; they should be free of significant impairments that would affect one’s ability to perform as a human services or chemical dependency counseling professional. Students with untreated substance abuse or mental health disorders are considered to be not “ready” or appropriate for the curriculum. Personal maturity is reflected in one’s ability to tolerate ambiguity, constructive criticism and to patiently address areas of growth. Individuals must possess the ability to balance personal and professional self-awareness.

Professional Identity:
Students must clearly demonstrate their commitment to ongoing development as an entry level human services and chemical dependency professional and a member of the “helping professions.” Such commitment is demonstrated by maintaining high standards of practice as a human service professional.

Individuals should possess a clear understanding of their motivation for choosing the helping profession. Students and candidates must demonstrate the ability to critically assess their own values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors as they relate to the standards of excellence, ethics, and best practices of the chemical dependency counseling and human services profession.

Students in the major are expected to exhibit appropriate professional attitudes and conduct.

Interpersonal Skills:
Students must demonstrate the ability to interact effectively with clients, families, colleagues, other helping professionals and the community, and to deal effectively with multiple diversities while maintaining professional boundaries.

It is important that students demonstrate: effectiveness in establishing positive interpersonal relationships on an individual and group basis; openness to constructive criticism; tolerance and openness toward differences; and the ability to develop appropriate support systems.

Individuals must possess the ability to identify sources of and seek out appropriate feedback from faculty, peers, and to utilize and provide feedback for improving personal and professional interactions; that is “supervise-ability.”
