1. State the Causal Theory of Memory, as set out by Bernecker. Explain the difference between direct and indirect (or representative) realism about memory, and discuss the analogy with the similar distinction in perception. Explain Russell’s idea that (a) through memory we have a kind of direct acquaintance with the past, and (b) this is the source of our concept of the past (discuss here the analogy with the way color perception gives us our concepts of the various colors). Discuss Hoerl’s idea that while memory presents us with evidence of the existence of past events, there is a realist way of understanding Russell’s idea as giving us the concept of the past as a domain in which events are located, where the facts about the events may outrun our ability to verify them.

2. Explain how the idea of the specious present arises in theorizing about our experience of motion, change and other temporal phenomena. Describe in detail what Lee calls the Process View of temporal experience, based on the Process, Mirroring, and Representation by Resemblance Intuitions. Illustrate how the view would apply to the case of someone seeing and hearing a musician play a few bars of music.. Explain why the possibility of extended “slow-motion” experience is inconsistent with the Process View. Describe the color phi-phenomenon, and explain why it constitutes a serious problem for the Process View. Explain how Lee’s own Atomic View, incorporating Trace Integration, can account for the experience we have of the color phi-phenomenon.

3. State the Argument from Passage for the A-theory of time. Explain how Paul’s B-theoretic response to the argument runs afoul of basic principles of intentional content attribution, in particular the idea that error depends on a background of veridicality. Discuss Deng’s alternative B-theoretic response, which views our experience as representing veridically a weak notion of temporal passage. What are the elements in our experience that convey this notion of passage? Explain why Deng thinks this kind of passage is consistent with B-theory. On the other hand, explain also why she is committed to the modest form of realism about tense (discussed by Falvey earlier in the course) in order to account for the phenomenological richness of our experience of temporal phenomena.
