How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery” by Anne Farrow, Joel

Read the Readings in American History selection #1 “How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery” by Anne Farrow, Joel Lange and Jenifer Franke in the Objective B Part 2 Canvas Module. While 90% of the slaves were in the South during the 1700s
it did not preclude the North from what is referred to as “complicity”
(enabling it) in slavery. The North not only accepted slavery and worked hand in hand with other places like the West Indies to support it, but it also had something of a thriving slave system of its own. First, describe this “complicity.” Why was it important to the North? Who was involved in it? Then explain why those growing up in
American rarely hear or are taught about it. Who was involved in it?
Careful! Could it have been unreported in the past? Covered up in the
face of the moral dilemma of freedom and slavery in the same colony? Explore ALL the possibilities.

Format

Papers should be 2-3 typed pages, double-spaced, with 1”
margins and in 12’ font. The date, course code, your name
and the title Objective B Paper should appear at the top of the
first page. You may add an additional “creative” title if you wish
to. Should you choose to quote or use ideas from the article, use
the parenthetical system for this, i.e. [Canvas,p23]. NO outside
sources are to be used, and any sort of plagiarism will result in
automatic failure.

Due Date March 6th

Papers are due ON THE DATE NOTED IN THE COURSE CALENDAR.
Legitimate reasons for lateness should be discussed with your
Instructor and permission obtained. Expect a 10 pt deduction for
late papers not approved. ALL PAPERS MUST BE COMPLETED
regardless, to complete the course.
