Assignment: Translate Productivity, Quality, and Communication in the Workplace
Your orientation to the new holacratic structure is complete, and you understand that while this means employee titles no longer exist, the role of supervisor still does. Now, the supervisory role of managing employees is separate from the supervisory role of ensuring goals and objectives are met. Frontline employees will be empowered to take more ownership over and accountability for their responsibilities within their respective departments, but there is still a need for the supervisors to ensure the department is meeting certain productivity and quality standards. What does that role look like at Zappos? Additionally, you understand that effective internal communication is a vital skill for all employees, regardless of job responsibility, particularly as everyone adjusts to the new structure.
This assignment is divided into 2 parts; both are combined into a single paper, complete with an introduction section and a summary section.
Part 1:
Discuss planning, productivity, and quality as these concepts apply to the new team-based structure at Zappos. In your discussion, consider the following:
• What types of planning take place in companies like Zappos? What are the characteristics of effective objectives, and what can supervisors do to ensure these objectives are met? What does the control process look like, why is it important, and what is the supervisor’s role in it?
• How are quality and productivity measured at Zappos? What are the constraints on productivity? How can quality and productivity be improved, and how are these improvements measured?
Part 2:
Using the MindMup tool, plot the communication process at Zappos in map form. Add at least four barriers to communication and under each, list how the barrier can be avoided. Also include at least four effective communication techniques that can be used at Zappos. When you are finished, under the File menu, select Export to Local Disk > Image (PNG). Click Export > Click here to open. Right-click the image to Save As (PNG file) to your computer. Insert the image into your paper in Part 2. Be sure to provide a title for your figure in APA format.
