Course Objectives
CO3: Discuss the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with regard to the provision
of culturally safe healthcare delivery.
CO4: Describe the importance of cross-cultural communication in relation to healthcare practice for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
CO5: Discuss contemporary healthcare strategies as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people and communities and explore barriers and enablers with regard to healthcare
delivery.
CO6. Describe approaches for promoting the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of individuals,
families and community groups in association with contemporary health policy and person centred
care.
Task instructions.
Your task is to produce an essay which focuses on cultural safety and communication and the
preferred health care practices when engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and
families. The essay should include an introduction and conclusion and your writing needs to be
supported by academic literature and key resources. Please use the course readings/ learning
resources as a basis for this assessment.
Part A – cultural safety principles and health care practices.
Describe each of the 5 principles of cultural safety outlined in the course reference below.
Explain how each principle relates to the preferred practices that health care providers should
undertake when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families.
Part B – culturally respectful communication practices
Identify and describe a range of practices which promote culturally respectful communication
with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families. Explain how these
communication practices can promote shared understanding and trust in health care
encounters and respond to consumers’ and families’ previous experiences of racism or other
barriers to health care.
Presentation, formatting and word limits
Your assignment should comply with academic writing requirements including formatting,
language and reference to the academic literature to support the ideas within the essay.
