Positive correlations are excited when two variables are moving in the same direction. An example of two variables that are positive correlated would be height and weight. Everyone has specific body shape that has been set for them, but some things Correlate and makes since for most humans. Taller people tend to weight heavier, this is due to the fact that people who are taller happen to have more bone density which takes up more space. “Mass = density * volume and mass and volume are directly proportional so as volume increases, mass increases too. Thus, taller people have more mass than shorter people And weight = mass of individual * gravity of earth. Since gravity is constant and weight is proportional with mass, resulting Taller people weigh more than shorter people(Shibero, 2019 pg 1). The higher the temperatures rise, the price of ice cream will rise Is another example of a positive correlation. The temperature can lead to a high activity of outside events and many look to eat ice cream to comfort them during the rising temperatures. Example of Negative correlations would be the fall of sales when it is raining. “Once you’ve input the data in the calculator, you’ll get a correlation number. For example, the correlation between rainy days and sales per week is -0.9. This means there is a strong negative correlation between rainy days and sales, or the more it rains, the less sales you make, or the less it rains, the more sales you make. As long as the number you get when calculating the correlation is negative, this means your variables have a negative correlation”(Glassdoor team, June 2019). Another negative correlation, the darker it gets outside you’ll have to keep more light on indoor. Your calculation should be decided by the amount of time you are using the light between dark time and the time it takes you to sleep, compared to the amount you spend on lights during a heavier daylight time period.

Hello everyone! I have to admit that these correlations are quite fun when you start to put things together that are not supposed to. Things like ice cream sales and violent crimes (positive correlation) or spending on sports admissions and high-fructose corn syrup consumption (negative correlation) are silly, but it does encourage us to take the time to analyze the statistics we read on a daily basis in order to really get the whole picture.
For my positive correlation this week I chose easy running mileage and successful running performance. Interestingly, I read about the study a few months ago in a magazine article, but the actual study just published in September. I will reference below, but the study states that there is a positive correlation to the amount of easy running athletes do and their success as distance runners. This is amazing to me, as a runner, as we would normally think of the amount of HARD or interval running might lead to more success.
A negative correlation that I have used in my work with H2F (Holistic Health and Fitness) is the amount of exercise people do and the amount of depression and anxiety that they have. There are several articles that highlight this phenomena and it is something that I use on the daily to encourage people to get out and exercise. The theories on why this happens ranges from the type of nutrition the people that exercise choose to consume, to the amount of blood circulated to the brain, or the neurotransmitters that are released during exercise. All of them have a valid basis, but the general take home is that we should all do some sort of movement in order to help our mental wellness.
