proposals include both informative and persuasive writing and interesting pictures, tables, or graphics. In science, a proposal
attempts to educate and convince the reader (funding agencies) to give the investigator money to perform the project. The proposal
has to be exciting, worthwhile, practical and appropriate. The effectiveness of a proposal depends on the ability of the writer to
explain the importance, context and scope of the project. The components that should be included in the proposal are listed below.

1. Title (Include Title, a picture relevant to the project, your name, your lab section, instructors name, date)
2. Introduction- Research Objective and Hypothesis.
3. Background and Significance/Previous Experiments.
4. Experimental Design and Methods/Controls and Variables.
5. Possible predicted results and how they would be interpreted.
6. References (3 minimum. At least 1 should be from a peer reviewed research journal. 1 reference can be your
lecture textbook/ebook or your Biosciences lab PDF document. If you use both, the e-textbook and the lab
PDF then you should include at least 4 references.) APA or MLA formatting is acceptable.
Length of Proposal
The proposal should be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation or PDF with appoximately 10-15 PowerPoint slides. More slides are
acceptable but 20 slides is the maximum number of slides unless additional slides are approved by an instructor.
Proposal selection. Select one of the labs from Biosciences I or Biosciences II and develop a proposal to modify the lab in some way.
Come up with an idea that uses some of the same procedures in the lab but modifies how things or what things are getting tested.
You may use the open inquiry questions at the end of each module for suggestions on how the lab could be modified. You don’t have
to modify every procedure completed in one of the labs. But you should select a procedure or 2 that can be modified such that your
proposal will fit within the overall project parameters. If you select a lab from the second half of Bio 1 (labs 6-9) or a lab from Bio 2,
then you may earn 2 points extra credit. All of the labs from Bio 1 and Bio 2 have brief synopses along with the lab PDFs in the
Research Project Folder.
Title. 1 slide. 5 Points
Make the title short, relevant to the project, and capable of grabbing the reader’s attention. Include a picture that is relevant to your
project. Include your name, your lab section, your instructor’s name, and the date).
Introduction – Research Objective and Hypothesis-Include this heading at the top of the slide(s). 1 slide. 10 Points
Give a succinct summary of what you intend to accomplish and the hypothesis you intend to test. The introduction should be no more than a
few sentences with which you describe the problem, state what you will test, and explain why the project is worth doing. You have the rest of
the proposal to provide the details. You will probably find it is easier to write this section last. Write the hypothesis in the proper format (If,
then, because) and underline the hypothesis to make it stand out. Include a relevant picture.
Background and Significance. (2-5 slides) Include this heading. Include a visual on every slide (picture, graph, something interesting other
than text). 10 Points.
Give some background information on the subject thereby putting the project into the correct context (“the big picture”) and identifying the
objectives of the project. This is where you will review and cite already published literature relevant to your project. The background section
should answer:
What is already known about the subject from the literature?
What is the specific purpose of your study?
What is the hypothesis you are testing?
Why is the subject interesting?
Experimental Design and Methods (2-5 slides) Include this heading. Include a visual on every slide (picture, graph, something
interesting other than only text. 10 Points.
Give detailed descriptions of the methods you will use. The design of the experiments, the composition of all solutions, the methods of
data collection, and the methods of data analysis, etc. must be included. Be succinct when describing the protocols; this should NOT be
written as a step-by-step procedure. Constructing a data table for your expected results should help clarify your experimental procedure.
If the experiments will use methods that have previously been described, it is sufficient to provide a reference to the original article. If
appropriate, you may refer to the class Lab Manual as a source of general procedures and for materials, but you must explain in detail
any deviations from these procedures.
Predicted Results (2-5 slides) Include this heading. Include a visual on every slide (picture, graph, something interesting other than
only text. 10 Points.
Could there be more than one outcome?
What would the outcomes mean relative to the hypothesis?
Will a certain outcome require you to take a different direction?
Will a negative result tell you anything?
References. 3 minimum. 5 Points.You may use APA or MLA formatting for citations or you may use the following link and
the Name-Year format (second tab) as a guide for how to format your citations. 3 references minimum should be used. At
least one reference should be from a peer reviewed research journal. You can use Google Scholar, Pubmed or the UTSA
library databases to search fro relevant peer reviewed research articles. Your lecture textbook or your lab PDF document
may count as one of the 3 references. If you use both of these as references, then you will need to have a minimum of 4
references.
