Gross, Lawrence W. (2005). Teaching American Indian Studies to Reflect American Indian Ways of Knowing and to Interrupt Cycles of Genocide. Wicazo SA Revieew, 20(2) 121-145.
This is an article that emphasized teaching American studies as a means of interrupting cycles of genocide. He states that instead of segregating studies to American Indians versus teaching non American Indians segregates and doesn’t allow for diversity. He argues that if Indians are going to function in mainstream culture, they have to have certain knowledge of general studies such as science, mathematics, literature, and other academic disciplines. AS they implemented this change they noticed the students were doing what they needed but their voices were still not being considered. They changed that perspective and they started letting them respond to what they have learned from the assignment. This helped broaden their ways in which they can relate their own experiences helping to reduce racial divisions. Although this was a nice read I do not think this article will help with my work. This was more on what we could do to help current Native American children and their learning with non-Indian children.
Jacobs, Margaret D. (2016). Genocide or Ethnic Cleansing ? Are These Our Only Choices ?. The Western Historical Quarterly, 47(1), 444-448.
The article she is intending to critique Gary Clayton Anderson’s definition of ethnic cleansing as “forced dislocation with the intent to take away lands of a particular ethnic, religious or cultural groups.” He argues that what happened to them was not genocide and stated that because relatively low numbers of Indians were killed and there was no official intent to eliminate them. She argues that instead of the genocide it was more that they were transferring indigenous children to homes of non-Indian families causing the stop of their family growing larger. She does not think that either term genocide nor ethnic cleansing does not do the justice against them. She also argues that these two words are formed from an European concept to address the Holocaust. The term she says that really needs to be termed is, settler colonization.
