Virginia Tech’s motto is “Ut Prosim” which means ‘That I May Serve’. Share how you contribute to a
community that is important to you. How long have you been involved? What have you learned and how
would you like to share that with others at Virginia Tech?
Chantilly Library has been part of my life since I was born. It’s where I learned to read attending toddler
reading classes. During the summer of my freshman year in high school, I had an opportunity to join the
Chantilly Library Teen Advisory Board to give back to the place that connected me to educational resources,
fun programs, and other students. Under Mrs. Gilbert, Youth Services, I learned to plan and implement active
and passive library programs for the teens in my community. This is my last year as a member of the board,
but I would love an opportunity to share my knowledge with the United Way of the New River Valley at
Virginia Tech.
Resilience is defined as the ability to adapt and learn from a difficulty. Reflect on a time that you have
exhibited resilience. What growth did you see in yourself after this experience?*
Covid-19 has taken so much from people all around the world including my family. My beloved grandfather
passed away during the pandemic, and I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. The pain of unexpected loss
was unbearable, but I couldn’t forget what my grandfather taught me growing up. It’s to bounce back from
adversities and come back stronger like he did all his life. I gave time to myself and grieved with my family
which was comforting. I realized death is part of life, but the bond I had with my grandfather would never
fade. This gave me the strength to move forward and get back to school and work with a renewed sense of
purpose.
Share a time when you were most proud of yourself either as a role model or when you displayed
your leadership. What specific skills did you contribute to the experience? How did others rely on you for
guidance? What did you learn about yourself during this time?*
In freshmen year, I had the privilege of leading my volleyball team as the captain. I brought what I learned
over the years as a player and watching other captains communicate effectively, lead by example, and treat
everyone with respect. Most importantly, I gave my best effort day after day by working hard and
encouraging everyone to give their best effort as well. Although I was not the best player of the team, I was
great in helping my teammates achieve excellence, and the players appreciated it. I felt honored to be the
person players came to when they needed help. This experience has taught me motivating others
encouraged me too as it gave me a feeling of positivity.
Describe a goal that you have set and the steps you will take to achieve it. What made you set this goal
for yourself? What is your timeline to achieve this goal? Who do you seek encouragement or guidance from
as you work on this goal?*
Navigating high school years is quite challenging. There are many changes that happen during this time and
having a mentor by your side is a great advantage. My goal is to develop a mobile application called SUP
for students who want guidance and mentorship. It’s a goal that I have set since my freshmen year and
reviewed frequently for relevance to help students like a lot of my friends who lack family support. The next
four years in college as a Business Information Technology major will enable me to learn the application
development process, collaborate with my fellow peers and deploy it with guidance and support from my
sister who is a Virginia Tech alumni currently working at Salesforce.
