In our culture, we see marriage as an important part of creating and maintaining
families. Please watch the “marriage” and “changes after marriage” videos and read the
Schwartz article before working on this paper. For this assignment, you will get a chance
to learn more about what makes a successful marriage and to apply some of the
information you learned in this course. You will need to interview a married couple who
consider themselves happily married. They must have been married for at least 5 years.
If you cannot interview them in person you may interview them over the phone. Take
notes while you are conducting the interview, type up your notes, and attach them to your
paper. Here are some of the guidelines for this paper:
● This paper must be 2-4 pages long, double-spaced, with 12 point Times New
Roman font and one inch margins.
● Start with a description of the married couple. Without giving their names, give
basic information on each individual in the couple such as age, occupation,
education, and city of residence. How long have they been married? Do they
have any kids?

When you are conducting your interview make sure that you ask questions that can get at
the information needed below. Make sure to tell your participants that their names will
be kept confidential and will in no way be linked up to what is said in the interview.
When doing the write up for your paper you must address these topics as you describe
your findings in the interview. (Note: your interview questions might differ slightly from
the questions below. For instance, you won’t ask them if they are following the rules of
endogamy. My guess is that most people have no idea what that means. You will just
need to ask them about their social groups – or in some cases observe their memberships
to social groups – in order to determine if they are following or breaking these rules).
– Courtship: How did they meet? How long did they date before they got married?
What characteristics did they look for in a mate? Did they practice the rules of
endogamy and exogamy? Or did they break these rules?
– Love: When did they know they loved each other? According to the videos on
love, what type of love do they express?
– Marriage: What do they think is important to maintaining a good marriage? Upon
what should marriage be based? When was “the right time” to marry? What
expectations did they have going into the marriage? Were these expectations
