To write a rhetorical analysis for the CEO of Disney – Robert Iger. Choose 3-5 popular quotes from CEO and analyze each of them
CEO RHETORICAL ANALYSIS
The CEO Rhetorical Analysis researches and analyzes the rhetoric—the effective
messaging or speech—of a CEO of your choice. Choose an individual that you
admire, as the values inherent in the CEO’s rhetoric are a key part of your document.
The document should be entirely in paragraph form with no bullet points or images.
Your text should include the following sections in the order provided.
1. Introduction. The Purpose Statement and Plan for your document. No more
than three sentences.
2. Rhetorical Analysis.
a. Select three to five rhetorical statements—again, rhetoric or powerful
messaging—by your CEO. Any written or spoken media is acceptable:
interviews, keynote speeches, lectures, TV/video interviews, Op-Eds,
open letters, or other media/documents. However, make sure your
sources are credible and accurate. Do not cite satirical publications
such as The Onion or the Borowitz Report.
b. Identify a one-word value or quality exemplifying each chosen
statement. Examples may include leadership, vision, accountability,
character, ambition, humility, collaboration, and so on. (Note: these
qualities should be listed in your Plan for your Document [see
Introduction]).
c. Provide the following for each rhetorical point:
i. What the CEO said. Frame the quote in context. Quote
concisely, trimming extraneous words without changing the
content of the quote. Use three periods (…) to indicate you
have removed unnecessary text. No quotes longer than four
lines, here or for the “They Say” part of your document.
ii. Optional: Subsequent Actions or Results. Examine
whether the CEO’s subsequent actions backed up his/her
claims or ideas. If the CEO made a declaration or claim, did
(s)he follow through? In addition, what occurred as a result of
this action or inaction?
iii. What “They Said.” Detail what others—the media,
politicians, competitors, or other CEOs, for example—said or
wrote about the CEO’s statement, subsequent actions, and/or
results. Cite a source for each quote. This is the “They Say” part
of your document. No quotes longer than four lines, here or for
the CEO quotes themselves.
iv. What You Think. Provide your own assessment of the
CEO’s rhetorical statement, subsequent actions, and/or results.
Present your thoughts in relation to what others said. This is
the “I Say” part of your document. Be clear as to why you agree,
disagree, or agree/disagree in part with the assessments of
others.
3. Conclusion. In a brief paragraph—no more than five sentences—summarize
the overall findings of your rhetorical analysis. Recall the plan for your
document, your assessment of the selected rhetorical points, and your
overall assessment of the CEO’s rhetoric.
