French Revolution

Consider the similarities and differences in the opinions of John Locke, Immanuel Kant, and Henry David Thoreau on the subject of conformity and state and personal liberty. Next, ask yourself what factors made the actions and results of the French Revolution so different from the American Revolution and did those factors determine the outcome.

THEN, Use the following questions to guide discussion question #1:

*How did art reflect the revolutionary period in France and early American history? Give an example and draw the connection.

* Neoclassical style was deemed appropriate for sculpture and architecture in the “new” United States. What were the reasons given and by whom?

*Choose a philosopher and/or philosophy of the time that best represents the historic changes occurring in that period. Explain your choice.

Discussion Question #2 – due by day 5

Before answering this week’s discussion question #2, please do the following reflections (these do not need to be completed in writing – you are thinking and reflecting on these to be able to answer the questions)

Consider some of the prominent features of the art style of Impressionism. Next, consider how the invention of photography changed the focus for artists during this time period. Consider the subjects of portraits through the different cultural eras that you have studied.

THEN, Use the following questions to guide discussion question #2:

How did the early 20th century invention of photography change traditional forms of art such as painting, sculpture, portraiture, etc.?
With the advent of photography, does the value of the painted image change?
What is one example of the style called “realism” in painting and how did this work of art connect events during this time period.
Why is Manet’s work considered avant-garde? Provide one example of his work to describe.
Is “propaganda” an appropriate term to apply to Gardner’s and O’Sullivan’s photographs of war? Explain how photography changed how we document history.
