There has been more of a shift in medicine over the years towards preventative medicine. It is
a much easier process than fighting an uphill battle with disease that has already appeared and
had time to flourish and cause harm. A large part of preventative medicine is in screenings
and vaccinations. Bickley (2017) explains that primary prevention consists of interventions
designed to prevent disease and secondary prevention consisting of screening tests designed to
find disease or disease processes at an early, asymptomatic stage (p.55). Primary prevention
can be vaccines that are received yearly or at age-specific intervals to help prevent disease and
infection. The older, younger, or more immune deficient an individual, the more important
these preventative measures become.
Unfortunately, there has been a resurgence of disease that had once mostly
been eradicated due to the movement of anti-vaxxers, those that chose not to
vaccinate due to religious belief or concerns of safety and the cause of other
problems. This year alone, we have seen an increase and spread of measles in
the news and throughout communities. Luckily, there have only been two
reported cases this year in San Diego County according to Measles (n.d.).
Immunizations play such a huge role in prevention of disease and illness.
Even seemingly simple vaccines that are available at the end of each summer
such as the flu vaccine. I live in San Diego, and work in a busy emergency
department. As staff, we have the option to receive the flu shot at no cost or
wear a mask for our 12 hour shift the entirety of the flu season. Two years
ago, they missed by a long shot on the vaccine make-up and I have never been
so busy for so many months in my entire nursing career. It just goes to show
that with vaccinations, the incidence of illness is drastically reduced and
illness related problems or deaths can be avoided. As part of our ED
assessment, we ask about current vaccinations and offer to provide in the ED
during that visit. It is up to the medical staff to be thorough, with each and
every patient, and explain risks vs benefits when asked or appropriate or
prompted. Our patient's and community look to us for guidance and help. This
goes the same with any generation we care for, even the older adult. The older
adult can be routinely asked and offered pneumonia vaccinations as well.
Poor health and taking serious actions for preventative measures for disease
and illness wreaks havoc on a community. It causes illness to spread quickly,
taxing hospitals, staffing, and causes overcrowding of healthcare facilities. It
causes longer wait times which can be detrimental to those having real-life
emergencies that need timely care. So it goes without saying that
immunizations are important and we need to do everything that we can to stay
