Anti-Sexual Violence Activists

Assignment: Write an 8 page, double-spaced essay that synthesizes your own ideas on our subject with those presented in class materials, feedback, guest presentations, and discussions. Engage in a conversation with the class materials and outside sources of your choice to form a dynamic piece of writing that expresses your thoughts and understanding of our subject.

Purpose: This assignment is designed to demonstrate your thinking about the quarter and our subject–what you got out of it, what you feel strongly about, or its overall impact for you.

How? Review what we explored this quarter and choose some issues that are most meaningful to you. Use course material and outside sources to discuss your ideas. You can write about the impact of these issues on your thinking, beliefs, and life. Or, you can make a case for something you feel strongly about–see my example just below.

We explored: gender-based sexual violence, historical context of anti-rape movements, the need for an intersectional approach to the subject, the meaning and complexity of consent, who is and isn’t included in various aspects of the subject, and activism.

Example: I feel very strong about the need for an intersectional approach to our subject…so I’ll discuss how that relates to the meaning of consent, inclusion and exclusion of voices, and activism.

Include these components and employ these skills in your writing:

Thesis: a claim or guiding idea that you will support in your paper. A preview of the content of your paper, often a few sentences near the beginning that mentions your central idea or main point.
Synthesize: combine or pull together pieces or concepts
Analyze: Take apart and look at something closely
Reflect: Explore the connections between your own experiences/beliefs/ assumptions and ideas in the text.
Discuss: Explore an issue from multiple sides
