Course Description Considers how and why people differ physically within and between groups, the genetic and functional basis for these differences, and their significance for adaptation and survival. Topics range from skin, hair, and eye color differences to variations in body size and proportions, serological and biochemical differences, and growth pattern differences. Theoretical issues discussed include the concepts of race/clines, microevolution, and the continuing evolution of the human species.

3. Course Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this class, students will achieve the following:
a basic understanding of the genetic, morphological, behavioral, and cultural aspects of the human species.
an understanding of human variation through a focus on the basic genetics and the forces that lead to genetic variability within and between populations and across generations.
an ability to discuss in detail several examples of variability in genetic traits and their adaptive significance, especially in relation to disease and pathogens.
the development of oral and written communication skills showcasing the acquisition, understanding and development of scientific literacy of human variation.
the ability to deal with morphological, behavioral, and cultural aspects of human variation and adaptations to the environment.
the ability to synthesize, apply and condense course materials in preparation for quizzes and examinations.
