Motivation refers to the desires or needs that drive people’s actions. These desires could be influenced by culture, lifestyle, or environments. Today, most organizations rely on employee motivation for improved performance.1 However, the difference in the motivational methodologies is what separates organizations in the market. The Golden Circle and Goal-Setting theories are examples of ways employees can be motivated in a work environment.

At the outset, the goal-setting theory uncovers the influence of goals on an individual’s performance. In this theory, performance is measured based on an individual’s ability or the team to actualize the initially stated goals.2 According to Van der Hoek et al, people tend to perform better if the stipulated goals are specific and challenging.2 As a result, they draw their motivation from the need to achieve the stated objectives in the work environment. However, the influence of the goal-setting framework on employee motivation is mainly premised on the employer’s ability to provide the resources and support required for goal realization.1,2 This concept can be achieved by enhancing communication and collaboration among team members in the organization. Therefore, goal-setting is a viable means of motivating employees towards realizing better outcomes in a work environment.

Unlike the goal-setting theory, Sinek’s Golden circle focus on uncovering why people are motivated to perform in their work environment. Sinek views motivation as a concept encompassed in three concentric circles emanating from the inside in a why-how-what pattern.3 Despite most organizations focusing on what they do, Sinek stipulates that successful organizations motivate their clients and employees from what they believe.3 Even though goals provide direction, it is the belief that inspires people to remain focused on realizing their dreams.3 According to Sinek, people tend to focus on the organization’s purpose rather than what it offers in the market.3 As a result, they work towards realizing what they believe rather than the remuneration that comes with the achievement. In Sinek’s Golden circle framework, the organization’s belief serves as the motivation for the employees’ performance.

Despite the benefits of Sinek’s Golden Circle, the goal-setting theory is the most suited in our organization. In the Military family practice clinic, our mission is to provide specialized care to the soldiers, their families, and the surrounding communities. Given the emergence of the Covid-19 situation, the goal-setting framework has been imperative in our ability to maintain high levels of safety and patient management. The goals not only accord us direction but are also fundamental in our ability to adhere to the Covid-19 prevention measures and the safety of practitioners. In this precarious moment, the goal-setting framework is our impetus for maintaining quality care accorded to patients. Adherence to the organization’s standards and practice has been a significant step in reducing covid-19 infections among patients. Thus, the goal-setting theory is most suited to our organization than Sinek’s Golden Circle framework.

Moreover, the military family practice clinic is an organization committed to realizing its mission in society. In this organization, we are all required to work collaboratively towards realizing the organization’s goals. Based on this concept, the goal-setting theory is the most suitable framework to inspire positive performance among practitioners. Inherently, clinical practice is a career dependent on following instructions and the outlined goals. Therefore, focusing on individual goals is paramount in our ability to protect patients and society against diseases.
